Most "prep" you'll find online is the same simple recipe: smear mud on the ball, let it dry, wipe most of it off, ship it. That's it. The ball comes out a little darker and feels slightly less slick — but the leather hasn't actually been opened up, the laces haven't been worked in, and there's no consistency from one ball to the next.

• Brushing: An electric brush goes over every panel to open up the leather grain and take off the slick factory coating.
• Conditioning and mud: A coat of Wilson conditioner, then honey leather conditioner, then Lena Blackburne rubbing mud mixed with Wilson conditioner, worked into every panel. The mud sets for hours before the caked-on top layer comes off.
• Sealing: Mink oil locks the mud into the grain, a heat gun helps the leather take in the oil, the rest is power-brushed in, and a second coat of Wilson conditioner keeps the leather soft.
• Wax: Wilson wax goes on every panel, is melted into the leather with heat, and is buffed into the grain with the electric brush, so the ball is tacky, not sticky.
