What Are Mudded Footballs?
Mudded footballs are leather game balls that have been treated with a special silt-based mud as part of a preparation process. Some people search for "muddled footballs" — same idea — those are mudded footballs prepared with football mud to break in the leather. The mud isn't there to dirty the ball up; it's there to remove the slick factory wax that comes on every new leather football and to open up the pebbled grain so a quarterback's fingertips can actually grip the surface.
Football mud has been used at the professional level for decades.
