The Nike Vapor Elite football is built with premium top-grain leather, and like any leather game ball, how long it keeps its grip and feel depends a lot on how it's treated. Leather that's left in a hot car, dried next to a heater, or scrubbed with the wrong cleaner can go stiff and slick long before its time. Here's how to get the most out of a Vapor Elite, from the day it arrives to the day it's ready for a re-prep.
1. Start With a Ball That's Already Broken In
A brand-new Vapor Elite comes out of the box with a slick factory coating and stiff leather. A lot of players try to fix that by throwing it on concrete, soaking it, or rubbing on household products, and that's where the damage starts. Starting with a properly prepped ball skips all of that.
Our Fully Prepped Nike Vapor Elite ($165) goes through the same 12-step process as every ball we sell, done by hand with 3 days of drying and setting time: the factory coating is brushed off, the leather is conditioned, Lena Blackburne rubbing mud is worked in, and it's sealed with mink oil and finished with Wilson wax. Every ball is grip-tested before it ships. One thing to plan for: the Vapor Elite takes up to 5 business days to ship, longer than our Wilson balls.
2. Rotate It Instead of Throwing It Every Day
The fastest way to wear out any ball is to make it your only ball. If you throw every day, keep a second ball in the rotation so each one gets time to rest and dry out between sessions. Many players save their Vapor Elite for games and their most important throwing sessions and use a second ball for everyday work. See How Many Footballs Does a Football Team Need? for how teams handle a rotation.
3. Throw It on Grass and Turf, Not Pavement
The pebbled surface of the leather is where your grip comes from. Grass and turf are easy on it. Concrete and asphalt act like sandpaper and wear the pebbling down, and a smooth ball is a slick ball. Keep a cheap ball around for driveway catch and save the Vapor Elite for the field.
4. Dry It Slowly After Wet Days
Rain and wet grass happen. Towel the ball off and let it air dry at room temperature. Never put it next to a heater, on a radiator, in a dryer, or under a hair dryer. Fast heat pulls the oils out of leather and leaves it stiff. The mink oil and wax from our prep help the ball handle moisture, but slow drying is still what keeps the leather healthy. More in Rain, Cold & Wind: How a Prepped Football Handles Bad Weather.
5. Store It Indoors, Out of the Heat
Between sessions, keep the ball inside at room temperature, somewhere dry and out of direct sunlight. A car trunk in summer or a cold garage in winter is hard on leather. A ball bag or a shelf in the closet is all it needs.
6. Keep It Inflated Correctly
Follow the manufacturer's recommended pressure and check it with a gauge instead of guessing. An over-inflated ball feels hard and puts extra stress on the seams; an under-inflated one loses its shape. Moisten the inflation needle before you insert it so it slides in cleanly, and go straight in rather than at an angle.
7. Clean It the Right Way
After a muddy practice, let the ball dry and brush the loose dirt off with a soft brush. Skip dish soap, wipes, and spray cleaners. They strip the leather's natural oils, and the prep goes with them. Our full care guide covers the rest, and No Shortcuts explains what never to put on a football.
8. Re-Prep It When the Grip Fades
Even a well-cared-for ball loses some of its grip with heavy use. When that happens, you don't have to replace it. With Send-In Prep, you mail us your Vapor Elite and it gets the same full prep as a new ball, for $50 including a prepaid label to send it in. It usually takes 2–3 weeks from order to delivery, often less. Prep improves grip and feel, but it can't repair damage or a worn-out ball.

Is the Nike Vapor Elite a leather football?
Yes. The Nike Vapor Elite is made with premium top-grain leather. That's why it can be prepped, and why it rewards good care. See our Fully Prepped Nike Vapor Elite.
How long does a prepped Nike Vapor Elite take to ship?
Up to 5 business days, which is longer than our Wilson balls. You get a tracking number as soon as it's on the way, and you choose USPS Ground Advantage ($10), Priority Mail ($15), or Priority Mail Express ($60) at checkout.
Can I get my old Vapor Elite re-prepped?
Yes, as long as it's leather and not damaged. Send-In Prep is $50, including a prepaid label to send it to us, and usually takes 2–3 weeks total.
Should I get a Vapor Elite or a Wilson GST?
Both are leather game balls. The Vapor Elite is the Nike option; the Wilson GST is the ball we recommend for most quarterbacks. Our comparison of the best footballs for quarterbacks breaks it down.
